Rogue Movers
A “Rogue Mover” can also be called a scam artist and criminal company. They are a company who poses as a real company in attempt to get your business and money. They will give you quotes, likely contract your move out, and then your delivering company will demand thousands of dollars more to deliver your HHGs, essentially holding them hostage.

RED FLAGS TO WATCH FOR:

- The company has no address listed. This means they do not have a physical office that you can go and walk into.

- They have no US DOT number listed, no state number, no moving industry associations listed
- They require a lot of personal information and want to send verification codes in order to give you quotes
- Nothing on their website shows they actually own trucks and personnel
- When you submit information for a quote it says, “they are finding you the best option available”, which often means they are a move broker, so they will contract your move out
- When you get a confirmation email it’s very vague and empty
- They base the quote on space and not weight
- They require a deposit in advance
- You should always get multiple quotes when hiring a full-service company (3-4 minimum).
- Ask questions about their claim's history, insurance coverage, experience with military, moving association affiliations, their DOT (department of transportation) number, do they own trucks, are they a broker?
- If you do not have the warm fuzzies after talking with them, walk away.

If you find yourself with a rogue mover:

- If you can cancel the services before work begins then do so. If you paid with a credit card, then you may be able to dispute the charge if they will not refund any deposits

- File a complaint with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)

- Report the company to any state moving associations

- If your company is refusing delivery and your household goods are being held hostage you may want to contact authorities to file a theft report

- Seek legal guidance. Since you hired the company yourself, your local installation JAG office should be able to assist and provide guidance
