Retirement
Let's Talk Retirement

Transportation Entitlement:
As a retiree or separatee with 8 years of more of active duty and receiving severance/separation pay, you have 3 years from your effective retirement date to make a personal property move to your final home of selection (HOS).
You are authorized to ship to the following locations:
- Any place within the United States (all 50 states to include Washington DC).
(Note: If you plan to ship to Puerto Rico, or any US territory, you may be subject to customs or additional fees.)

- The home of record (HOR) outside the United States of the place outside of the United States from which the member was initially called or ordered to active duty.

- Outside the United States. You will be responsible for the costs from the furthers point in the CONUS to that direction (example: shipping to German, the government will pay costs going from the current duty station to an eastern CONUS location such as New York, Baltimore, etc. You will be responsible for the costs from the CONUS point to Germany). You may also pay additional fees: customs, import, excise tax.

Once your HOS is chosen, that selection is irrevocable if government-procured transportation is used and completed. This means if you are retiring from an OCONUS location, and you think you might be going to Dallas, Texas, and you have your shipment sent to Dallas, and then you end up moving to New York, you will be responsible for the shipment fees from Dallas to New York. If you are not 100% sure where you are going, you should utilize your NTS entitlement.

Extensions
If unexpected events prevent you from moving your property to your HOS within the 3-year time limit, you may request a travel/transportation entitlement extension thru your Transportation Office. The Secretarial process MAY allow you extensions in 1-year increments for a period not to exceed 6 years from the effective Retirement Date from Active Duty.

Extensions must be submitted annually through the personal property office. Extensions should be submitted at least 30 days before the expiration date.

Storage Entitlement
If you do not have a permanent address at your destination, you can choose from two storage options:

- Non-Temporary Storage - You are also authorized non-temporary storage (NTS) of all or part of your household goods for up to 1 year after release from active duty. NTS will be stored in the local are at government expense and affords you more flexibility versus shipping your property immediately to a destination (for example finding employment, purchasing a new home, getting family settled, etc.). Once your NTS is released for final shipment, it must be direct delivered. The government storage at destination is not authorized. The destination you choose will be your HOS, and no further onward movement is authorized.

You have 1 year from your retirement date to use NTS. NTS is no longer valid if it is not used within a year. You will use your NTS entitlement, and it remains in storage beyond the one-year anniversary of your retirement date, the storage will be converted to your expense. Your NTS can still be delivered at the government's expense. However, you must apply and receive an extension of your NTS entitlement before it expires. The JPPSO can give you a storage cost estimate.

NTS can be utilized once orders are in hand, and before date of retirement. The storage timeline does not start until the date of retirement.
