Frequently Asked Questions Retirment Entitlements
Q - How long do I have to make my retirement move?
A - You have 3 years from your effective date of retirement. You can apply for extensions up to 3 years afterwards.

Q - Once I receive my orders, how soon can I make my shipment?
A - Upon receipt of your orders, you may begin your process.

Q - Can I do a government move and a PPM move?
A - Yes. You also have the option to do a full PPM.

Q - Where can I ship from?
A - You can ship from your current and any previous duty station, home of record, and place of entry into active duty.

Q - Can I make more than one shipment?
A - You may elect to make more than one government shipment. However, as a retiree, you are only authorized one shipment at government expense. You could be responsible for excess costs incurred.

Q - Can I ship overseas?
A - Yes. However, you will be responsible for part of the shipping costs and any additional costs. The government pays for departure location to the port, after the port the expense is on the service member.

Q - If I must vacate my government quarters and move locally, does that consitute my final move?
A - Per JTR Chapter 5, para 052.013D, if you are a retiree living in government quarters and you have been given a notice to vacate, you are permitted a courtesy move from the vacated quarters to a residence in the local area. This would not count as your final government move. You will need to provide documentation verifying your notice to vacate. Weight entitlements applies to the courtesy move, any overage will result in excess cost.

Q - Can I move part of my household goods to my destination and place property in NTS?
A - Yes, however this would count as two shipments. Once your NTS is delivered, you could be subject to excess costs. Your NTS must be delivered to the same location where you sent your HHGS.

Q - Can I have an advance for my PPM move?
A - Advances cannot be made after the date of separation or retirement, except in the case of retirees who have one-year in which to make a final move to their home of selection. Advances issued to separated/retired military members will be monitored by the appropriate det management area.
Q - What entitlements am I authorized?
A - You are authorized per diem and mileage. You are NOT authorized DLA or TLE.
