Let’s Talk - Best Practices

A lot of time we feel like our home is an organized mess when it’s time to PCS. Especially when we try to pre-pack, prep and stage the home for the movers.

There are a few things that you should keep in mind when working on organizing your home for your crews:

Leave tables and counters clear. Many packers will use this space to put the packing paper and to wrap things accordingly.

High Value items should be consolidated to one area so they can be packed appropriately.

Hanging items can be removed from the walls and stacked together in a corner.

Anything that you are taking in the car with you should be secured in your car or in a closet that can lock.

Pets need to be secured into a bedroom or if possible at a boarding facility. Every year there are reports of cats getting to boxes and furniture and being shipped.

Anything in the attic or crawl space will need to be brought out for the crew. They are not required to enter those areas.

Additionally, anything that is on top shelves that they cannot reach safely while standing will need to be brought down to a lower level.

Your home needs to be tidy/clean. The trash should be taken out, and items need to be in the room that they belong on. The exception to this could be when doing a UB/UAB shipment and things need to be brought to a central location.

Per the DTR PART IV ATTACHMENT K1 states “Ensure any untidiness of your residence or pickup location does not hinder the job performance of the crew that packs your property.” (Screenshot in comments- you can find the document in the files of this group)

If a home is deemed untidy/unclean the crew can refuse the job (it has happened and moving industry personnel have sent me pictures of homes they have gone to that have been complete messes). We understand that it is often a “organized mess”, but it still needs to have some sort of cleanliness to the rooms.
